The Greta Pivot

Tick-tock, tick-tock.

We've been saying it for years now -- Greta Thunberg, serial truant child activist, is getting desperate. Thunberg, at twenty, is no spring chicken, and she's been slowly waking up to a reality which scores of child stars -- from the Little Rascals to the kids on Diff'rent Strokes -- were made to realize eventually: When you stop being cute, it's time to find another walk of life. Just ask Shirley Temple.

Consequently, Thunberg has been trying to pivot, transforming her image from the poster child for eco-anxiety to a full spectrum Leftist activist. Speaking in London last year, Thunberg stated that her ultimate goal is overthrowing "the whole capitalist system," which she claimed is responsible for "imperialism, oppression, genocide [and] racist, oppressive extractionism."

Of course, if little Greta had devoted less time to her celebrity these past several years and more to the study of history, she might have noticed that all of these things pre-dated the development of the capitalist system, with the possible exception of "oppressive extractionism," as it is unclear what that actually is. She might also have learned another fact which makes her claim patently ridiculous. That is, as Michael Shellenberger put it:

The "whole capitalist system" has, over the last 200 years, allowed for the average life expectancy of humans to rise from 30 to 70 years of age. The "whole capitalist system" produces larger food surpluses than any other system in human history. And the "whole capitalist system" has resulted in declining greenhouse gas emissions in developed nations over the last 50 years.

In any event, she's recently jumped on another band wagon, coming out in support of the Hamas terrorists who murdered 1,300 Israelis, an attack which included raping scores of women and taking roughly 200 hostages, men, women, and children. That oughta win her some new fans!

Interestingly, that was the second photo she Tweeted out on this topic. The first included a prominently displayed toy octopus, which seemed to invoke the antisemitic trope of the Jews controlling the world. Eventually she deleted the original tweet.

Will Greta's rebranding work? It's doubtful. She's aged out of her niche, and now she's attempting to fill a role that is already occupied by innumerable activists. Anything can happen, but at the moment she seems well on her way to becoming the half-forgotten answer to a question in Trivial Pursuit. And from where we sit, that day can't come soon enough.

  1. It is a shame that she is not an American, we could throw her out with the rest of the leftist shiites.
Who will all find joy in Green Venezuela, enjoying the easy life as farmworkers in Maduro's coca fields.
    Throw them out, every one.

  2. Her meme template is gone and Ziolensky is now at the bottom of the page.

  3. Greta does have one thing most wanna-be leftist figureheads don't - name recognition.
