After the Leftist Reign of Terror, the Deluge

A la lanterne!

If you want to get a glimpse of America in the near future, the first thing you must do is look to the past. Specifically, look to the last phases of the French Revolution. The Reign of Terror, in which the radical Jacobins took over control of France, has a direct analogy to the present situation in the federal government. Even better for America, however, is what happened afterwards.

But first things first.

With France in the midst of civil war, Danton, Marat, and Robespierre and his crew established a tyranny that filtered down to even the smallest towns. The deposed monarchy was given a sham trial (read: impeachment of a former President) and executed.

The death of Marat (1793)

The Terror instituted mass conscription, confiscation of grain from the farmers (read: oil), set price controls on essential goods and wages (read: minimum wage), de-Christianized the country (read: well, that one’s obvious), arrests via the “Law of Suspects” of all opponents of the Revolution (read: the enemies list of former Trump employees), and in the final irony, established a national religion called (I kid you not) Cult of the Supreme Being and that Supreme Being allegedly was “Reason” (read: climate change).

That’s the chilling analogy. But there’s more, and here’s where things get interesting.

The so-called “Committee of Public Safety” (read: The Squad) suspended the right to a trial and representation, and ordered wholesale slaughter.  More than 17,000 people died by guillotine, and another 10,000 died in prison.

Most people believe that nobles and royalists were the majority of those executed.  In fact, 72 percent of those killed were peasants, and another 12 percent were middle-class. The radicals murdered the very people that they claimed to be saving from tyranny.  Also killed were those who actually supported the revolution, but were either too far to the left (read: Bernie Sanders) or too moderate (read: Blue Dogs).

The point here is that the radicals, without having the monarchists to kick around anymore, began to eat their own. This is what we are already seeing with the Democrats and their modern day version of the committee on public safety and reign of terror.

Danton heads for the guillotine (1794).

  • New York Times reporter Donald McNeil was axed recently because he used the “N-word” in a discussion with students, who were asking if a classmate who had used the “N-word” in a video should be suspended.  When he spoke the “N-word” aloud to ask about the context in which the “N-word” had been used, it was determined that McNeil was a racist because he used the “N-word” in the context of trying to determine the context in which the “N-word” had been used.  Kafka would be proud.
  • California governor Gavin Newsom’s approval rating has crashed from 49 percent to 31 percent in a recent poll.  Some 40 percent of respondents said his oversight of the vaccine is “poor” or “very poor.” Numbers this high aren’t possible unless Democrats are angry with him.  Maybe they don’t like that he’s dining out at expensive restaurants and telling them to eat cake. He should be worried.  Voters kicked out Gray Davis simply because he tripled car registration fees.
  • The Left complains that Jeff Bezos’ $98 million gift to the homeless wasn’t enough.
  • BLM complains that Biden politically capitalized on the movement to get him into the White House.
  • It turns out the anti-Trump Lincoln Project of disaffected GOP losers was run by alleged pedophiles.
  • Meanwhile, in New York, the widely loathed, thuggish governor Andrew Cuomo's chickens are finally coming home to roost.

We’re going to see a lot more of this without Trump to draw focus anymore, on top of the fact that it is the natural course of things.  The Left is required by its own pronouncements to solve every problem, real or imagined. Yet because they are the ones now in power, all problems and solutions rest on their shoulders. Problems must always be created or amplified so the Left may continue its mission by always having to "do something."

Robespierre awaits execution (1794)

Climate change is the perfect example since were all going to die unless government "does something" to forestall the apocalypse.  So naturally, anyone who does not vote in favor of so – called environmental initiatives, or supports the president on his job-destroying executive orders, will become the enemy.  That will be true of any of the Left’s policy desires.  Oppose and die.

The most radical elements, seeing that their side is now in power, is going to demand that the long-awaited solutions be implemented. This is exactly what we saw when Obama was elected president. Yet because most of the problems the Left creates are imaginary, there are no real solutions. When policy is put into place to address these alleged problems, they end up harming the very people the solutions are supposed to protect.

Eventually, everyone gets fed up and they’ll start eating each other. That's exactly what happened in the French Revolution. Robespierre and the Jacobin government were overthrown, ushering in what was called “The Thermidorean Reaction -- the natural and inevitable swing of the political pendulum back to the Right.

That, my friends, is the light of the end of the tunnel. Just as the monarchy famously exclaimed, "after us, the deluge," in an apparent reference to the knowledge that the people would rise up following their reign, a right-wing populist deluge is destined to follow the current reign of terror.

It may also happen much sooner than any of us anticipate. The French Reign of Terror only lasted about a year. I suspect that the recall effort of Gavin Newsom is going to be the linchpin for the current incarnation of The Terror. As inappropriately terrified as California Democrats are about COVID-19, the Berkeley poll illustrates that they are pretty angry with how Newsom has handled the vaccine. It also forces them to pay attention to the haphazard and illogical lockdown policies that the governor has been juggling.

The Man on the White Horse cometh.

Los Angeles residents are equally irritated with mayor Eric Garcetti, who somehow managed to get the vaccine even though he wasn't eligible for it.  Nor are they buying his nonsense about "setting an example” by getting the vaccine.

Without Trump to kick around anymore, the Left must have a villain. Gov. Newsom fits the bill. Californians can't go after their congressional representatives or senators, lest they disrupt the balance of weak power they presently hold the federal level. Yet because they always must have a scalp, that scalp must also be accessible.

Newsom will be that scalp. After him, the deluge.

  1. There is always a pendulum, and it always swings. Right now the pendulum is like a kid on a swing at the top of the bar, and what the Left doesn't realize is that it will swing back just as fast and hard as they took it up, probably faster. Time to put adults back in charge.

  2. Mr. Morton's piece ends with Robespierre and doesn't address the further 21 years of turmoil in France and Europe. Whom does he or would he propose as our Napoleon Bonaparte? But I propose that we are at an earlier stage of France, that of 1787-89. France was being ruled through what was called The Ancient Law of France, their version of the English Common Law. To change anything through legal procedure was proving very difficult and the problem of nowhere near enough revenue to pay for being France (cost of the court at Versailles wasn't the problem--the expense of the War of the American Revolution which France couldn't afford was the problem. To put it in a nutshell, the Ancient Law of France got overthrown so things could be changed. In 1815 the restored Bourbons did not restore the Ancient Law of France and kept the Code Napoleon and its procedures and France got its modern form of a central government that orders its provinces around who can't resist other than by rioting which explains their frequent strikes and riots which often force the central government to pause.
What our next stage would be, if we are indeed aping France, is a Convention of the States to propose wholesale changes or maybe something simpler like Congressional activity in packing the SCOTUS or gaining some new states for extra Senators or a property tax on intangibles (stocks and other securities essentially) which is what a wealth tax is akin to the tax on real estate. At the extreme, the English Common Law might be overthrown and replaced with a body of codified law (years ago something like that was being attempted with "S-1" a Senate bill that Ted Kennedy was championing) and/or legal procedures overhauled to get rid of the stalemate we're dealing with now of judges' enjoining governmental actions left and right.
So I contend that we are only very early on in this process and the Estates General hasn't even been thought of; a Convention of the States (which has been talked of) would be like the Assembly of Notables empaneled in 1787 to advise the Royal government on what it might do to solve France's problems. For most Americans, French history consists of World War II propaganda that has been spoon fed to them by the Media which because of relatives who were killed in that war they are committed to the idea that France has to be the greatest foreign country in the world

While I wish this were true, it isn't. Progressive Fascism is ascending in the Democrat party and it wont be going anywhere for decades because the power structure exists outside of politics. The Democrat party has to change their ideology and there are no signs this is going to happen.

Things just don't magically change. For Democrats to change, it would take deliberate effort from them to do so. For non-Democrats to change the trajectory of society, it also takes a conscious effort. Things just don't happen. People make them happen.

It would be nice to think that the Democrats adoption of Progressive Fascism will collapse under its own weight but rather than the French Revolution, the example is China.

  4. I think we are in the early middle stages of a “Fourth Turning” (Strauss & Howe). There will come a cataclysmic disruption to American society (occurring every 80 to 100 years or so [using the Anglo-sphere & working backwards: WW2, Civil War, American Revolution, the Glorious Revolution, the Cromwell Rebellion]) But we will rebuild something. Who we need is a Grey Champion.

  5. I always find these comparisons with the French Revolution fascinating. But I always come back to this: how do you explain the over seventy years of the radical left communist party in China? Despite a mild lurch to the right after the Chinese Cultural Revolution, China has and remains a staunchly left of center government.

  6. When you do public executions of dissenters it’s not hard. No night time disappearances, no private discipline. Town square. And do hundreds at a time. The people will get the message. Soviets did it wrong, Hitler did it wrong. Mao did it right. Show no mercy and show your life only has meaning if the dictator says so. Be brutal but be brutal publicly.

  7. Communist China is National Socialist under the Communist rubric. For the Nation. Which nation? Their nation. For the people. Which people? The Chinese people. So is Japan - under the Capitalist rubric. In contrast, both Capitalism and Communism are globalist and against all nations and people, especially the ones from which they sprang.

  8. Whatever the outcome, it will originate from an amalgamation of the French Revolution, The Bolshevik Revolution and the Chinese Cultural Revolution or "Great Leap Forward". We can only hope there won't be as much violence and death as any of those Leftist scourges.

  9. I have a small ray of hope to offer you. My brother is a long time (30+ years) Communist organizer. I won’t tell you his specific organization, but I will tell you that it’s Trotskyist and operates out of Oakland California. He has worked with the traditional Communist parties of California as well as the folks who run Antifa (By Any Means Necessary - regardless of the pretend story that Antifa has no central command) and the folks who run BLM (Freedom Road Socialists, and the Chinese Progressive Society who are in turn run by the Chinese Communist party). Unfortunately, he is also a professor in the state system and is also associated with the NEA and other teachers unions.

Now the good news: this whole color revolution is being managed by the Chinese Communist party and the traditional organizers are PISSED that they’re being given so little control over things. It’s eating them up inside. They see the Biden puppet operating in lockstep with Xi Jinping’s wishes and ignoring theirs, throwing members of their loyal union base out of work and generally creating turmoil. It’s setting them at each other’s throats and they don’t know what to do about it. Here’s what you can do about it: grill your children’s teachers. Ask them how long they’ve been Communists (most teachers are, as they’re the only ones who can endure the propaganda during their own education and in their workplaces). Tell them that anyone using the term “white supremacist” is a lying communist supremacist propagandist. For you union members, attack your union heads. Ask them why they’re content to be China’s butt boys. Really rub it in that they’re useful idiots who are being used by China and will be discarded when their usefulness runs out. Go on the attack against Communism and force the Communists to butt grads with their CCP masters. Then you’ll really see the revolution begin to eat its own. Oh, and take your kids out of the Marxist colleges, There are still a few sane places left that they can transfer to. Avoid the UC and Cal State system like the plague.

  10. Big difference between the current political climate and the french revolution... None of the current actors today actually die... token prison sentences if they go at all.. They will live to voice their opposition another day... No guillotine, No dying in prison, "The Reign of Terror" is figurative Not literal... When this changes wake me up, otherwise it's just more melodramatics, and we have all had enough of that.
